Every day, I hear many young men and women lament the lack of employment opportunities. This situation is made worse by the growing competition in the labour market, which appears to favour those who possess additional skills relevant to their industry. In this piece, the focus will be on the requirements for choosing a fulfilling career. However, before that, it is necessary to understand what a career is and how to identify one that is truly fulfilling.
CAREER: A career is any chosen pursuit, profession, or occupation that one engages in for a long period of time. It can also be defined as any occupation one undertakes to earn a living or build a reputation within society. Examples include Accountancy, Law, Engineering, Medicine, and so on.
CHOOSING A FULFILLING CAREER:
The most important factor to consider when choosing a career is passion. It should be a profession or trade you genuinely love and derive satisfaction from. Ideally, your chosen career should align with at least 70% of your personality. Some of the key qualities of a fulfilling career include:
a) NOT STRESSFUL: A fulfilling career is one that does not cause undue stress. This means you feel comfortable and gain satisfaction from your work.
b) PROVISION OF EMPLOYMENT: A good career provides opportunities for employment, whether through a paid position or self-employment.
c) SHOWCASES YOUR UNIQUE ABILITIES: Another characteristic of a fulfilling career is that it highlights your unique talents and abilities, giving you confidence and authority in your chosen field.
d) SUCCESS: A fulfilling career also leads to success. It enables you to rise to a level where others admire and emulate you, making you a role model within your profession.
